Since I began to learn how to cook, I have viewed the process of preparing food as something more than just the mechanic task of feeding oneself. There is creativity and spirit in the kitchen, making the cooking or baking process lively, meditative, mindful, or educational. It may be a stretch, but I would venture to say that one’s relationship to cooking can tell you a lot about them. Do you ever catch yourself getting tunnel vision? That palpable sense that everything is getting smaller and tighter around you? It may sound a bit dramatic, but lately I feel this happening with all of the things I am juggling every day. Classes, rehearsals, writing weekly, travel plans coming up and then of course the daily little details of meetings, meals, responding to emails and keeping the house fairly tidy. They pile up until they are all you can see and think about and they completely block the view of the bigger picture. It is amazing how many expectations we set for ourselves based on past experience. Our minds seem to automatically assume that things will be as they once were, and yet this is almost never the case. I have only ever spent one Christmas away from home. It was in the midst of my 9-month backpacking adventure and while I was lucky enough to be among old family friends in a beautiful little crescent of northern Norway, it just wasn’t quite the same. I had a lovely time in their Scandinavian cabin-like home, surrounded by dramatic icy waters and snow-laden mountains, lighting candles in the long dark hours and making the most of the 3-4 hours of sunlight.Read More

Last weekend I had a Thanksgiving meal that was quite outside of the box of a traditional American celebration. Every year since I have lived abroad has been a completely different experience of the holiday, and this time was among my favorites. M and I invited his family over for a late Sunday lunch, which meant I had the luxury of a whole weekend to prep and complete a couple hectic visits to the market, make pie crusts on Saturday and keep Sunday morning fairly stress-free as far as preparing large feasts for large groups of people go.Read More
